Transforming the Trent Valley seeks walking volunteers

We are recruiting volunteers in the Lichfield district and East Staffs area to help deliver the Trent Valley Way and circular footpaths projects within the Transforming the Trent Valley scheme area. Volunteers will walk potential and confirmed routes for monitoring and surveying.

We’re looking for more than 13,000 spirited, dedicated and dynamic volunteers to be the heartbeat of the Commonwealth Games, a community of passionate people coming together to help deliver the biggest sporting and cultural event the West Midlands has ever seen.  

Birmingham and the West Midlands is a community of communities, home to more than 180 nationalities. The Commonwealth Collective will represent the vibrancy and diversity of our people at Birmingham 2022, a home Games for every nation.

Local means Learning from mistakes… instead of repeating them

I have spoken on several occasions over the years about the value of local. This month I want to pick out a specific reason that local is so much better than highly centralised, top down programmes: learning from mistakes.

But first I will say that I am prompted to write about this, at this time because of the recent start of Covid-19 inquiries and some of the associated revelations.  Reflecting on the explosive evidence given to MPs by Dominic Cummings last week, we learnt that:

Library volunteers praised for making difference in their communities

More than a thousand volunteers from all walks of life are being praised for their unique contribution to Staffordshire’s library network.

Community groups, a health trust, and the first Rotarians group in the UK, plus many individual volunteers, are contributing the annual equivalent of around £1.2 million of their time to Staffordshire County Council’s library service.

Now 27 of the county’s 43 libraries are managed and run on a day-to-day basis by community managers.

NHS Blood and Transplant urgently need plasma donors

Thousands of patients rely on immunoglobulin medicines for short-term or lifelong diseases and genetic disorders.

The antibody medicines are used to treat people with weak immune systems and a variety of other rare disorders.

NHSBT after a 20 year pause have started to collect plasma for medicines: more information can be found here or to book an appointment call 0300 123 23 23.

Save lives today by donating your blood plasma

NHS Blood and Transplant is asking for men between the ages of 17 and 66 to consider donating their blood plasma. Plasma is used to make antibody-based medicines called immunoglobulins, for people with weak immune systems and a variety of other rare disorders. Thousands of patients rely on immunoglobulin medicines for short-term treatment or lifelong diseases.

An update to Library Services from 17th May

From the 17th May, as we slowly move out of lockdown the 16 Staffordshire County Managed Libraries:

Biddulph, Burntwood, Burton, Cannock, Codsall, Kidsgrove, Leek, Lichfield, Newcastle, Perton, Rugeley, Stafford, Stone, Tamworth, Uttoxeter, and Wombourne will be adding to their current service.

You will be able to choose items via managed browsing. We are currently limiting the number of people who can access our libraries at any one time in order to keep you safe.
