Wind Turbine Community Fund

Severn Trent Water is offering an exciting opportunity for local community groups and projects to apply for funding.

A community grant has been made available as part of their wind turbine development at Curborough Sewage Treatment Works, Lichfield. The turbine will have a 500kW capacity and be 50m tall to its hub or 74m tall to the tip of its blades. It will play an important role in Severn Trent’s target to provide 50% of their energy requirements from renewable sources by 2020.

Apply to manage your community Library

Staffordshire County Council has opened invitations to run local libraries. Following a broad consultation and changes resulting from this feedback, the council are now asking local groups to formally apply if they want to run a local library. As well as the community run option, the county’s main libraries will continue to be run by the council and any local libraries not securing community-run status will remain under the council umbrella. These local libraries will be seeking additional volunteers and run in a new way.

Social Enterprise West Midlands acquired by Social Enterprise UK

The infrastructure body for Social Enterprises in the West Midlands is being bought by London based Social Enterprise UK. Despite a promise to keep the Birmingham office open with its four staff, SEUK have also said they will seek to integrate the two businesses after speaking to members later this year. The deal should complete in June, with SEUK buying SEWM from Stoke based Aspire Group for an undisclosed fee.

Staffordshire County Council is re-commissioning VCSE Support Services

Staffordshire County Council has announced that it will re-commission support services to the VCSE sector in the autumn.

These services are currently provided by VAST Services and Staffordshire Council for Voluntary Youth Services to the tune of over £500k. The new contracts are expected to be awarded from April 2016 but the value of the service has not yet been announced.

Consultation: Staffordshire's Food Landscape

Staffordshire County Council has f3 Local Food Consultants with the aim of gaining an overview of the breadth of Staffordshire’s food landscape and its current value to the local economy whilst also identifying sustainable growth opportunities in order to maximise the social, environmental and economic benefits.

To inform the early research phase of this project f3 have launched a selection of surveys tailored to include producers, processors/manufacturers, distributors, trade buyers, public sector, community initiatives, food waste and consumers.
