Winners of the 2019 Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service announced

Queens Award

A total of 281 organisations from across the UK have received the prestigious award this year including 6 in Staffordshire. It is granted to exceptional volunteer groups across the UK who are making a positive impact on the lives of others.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK to recognise exceptional service within their communities.

#DoingOurBit is a new campaign designed to inspire people to do one more small thing to help themselves, their family and those around them.

There's already thousands of people across Staffordshire doing small things that make a big difference, from putting out a neighbour's bin to eating healthier just one day a week.

People Helping People Fund

Despite dramatically reduced funding which means that Staffordshire County Council cannot do everything it once did, or would like to do, we can still make Staffordshire a great place to live and work. This means the county council and all of our communities need to work together differently, where the county council continues to focus on fulfilling its legal obligations and supporting the most vulnerable people in our communities, and communities do more for themselves and others.

Words of Welcome at Lichfield Library

The newly relocated Lichfield Library at the Guild of St Mary's Centre in the Market Square is now offering an extra special welcome to all visitors including free refreshments, friendly volunteers and lively chat every Tuesday between 2pm and 4pm.  The Library has recently joined the national Places of Welcome network which is made up of small community organisations providing an unconditional welcome and hospitality to local people for at least a few hours each week.  The Library launched the new service on Tuesday 11th June and was pleased to meet and greet visitors young and old.

Bursary scheme in memory of Burntwood fundraiser Stephen Sutton open for applications

A scheme set up in memory of a Burntwood fundraiser to support young people in the town is open for applications.

The 2019 Stephen Sutton Bursary Award is handed out by Burntwood Town Council.

It is aimed at talented young people who live within the boundaries of the town and is split into two age bands – 11-14 years and 15-19 years. Up to £1,000 is available in each age category.

Nationwide Community Grants Programme

The Nationwide Community Grants programme awards up to £50,000 to local housing projects that will strengthen local communities by supporting the most vulnerable by:

  • Preventing people from losing their home
  • Helping people in to a home
  • Supporting people to thrive within the home environment

Nationwide believes doing what is right by their members and their communities is at the heart of what it means to be a building society. Following a member vote in 2007, Nationwide invests at least 1% of pre-tax profits to support good causes each year.

Tamworth gains a new Place of Welcome

Places of Welcome, the network of community groups which seeks to provide each neighbourhood with somewhere to go for a cuppa, a chat and some support, has another new addition. The latest place to join the network in the Tamworth area is Amington Church on the Green, which opens every Thursday from 2pm until 4pm.
