War Memorials Trust Grants
Wed 11 Dec 2019
Grants are available to protect and conserve war memorials marking any conflict, in communities in the UK who could not otherwise fund the works required.
Grants of up to £30,000 are available for up to 75% of total eligible project costs.
Currently, the Trust considers awarding grants of up to:
- £5,000 for non-freestanding war memorial.
- £30,000 for freestanding, non-beneficiary war memorials.
Decisions will depend on the amount of funding available and the grant scheme for which the project is eligible. Of the 166 grants awarded in 2018-19 the median award was £1,830 while the average was £4,949.

Work should aim to manage the natural process of decay without damaging the war memorial’s overall appearance, altering the features that give it its historic or architectural significance, or unnecessarily disturbing or destroying historic fabric.
The types of work that can be funded include:
- Like-for-like repair.
- Structural repair/stabilisation.
- Reinstatement of lost elements that form an integral part of the design.
- Professional condition surveys and structural reports.
Priority is given to those memorials in greatest need. The Trust will be able to deal with an enquiry more quickly if the war memorial has an up-to-date entry, including condition report and photographs, on War Memorials Online https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/.
