Raising awareness of mental health in Leek
Thu 11 May 2017
There was a very successful Mental Health Awareness and Activity day at Leek's Foxlowe Arts Centre on 9th May. This annual event, now in its fourth year, takes place to coincide with national mental health awareness week. The organisers – local statutory and voluntary organisations which support mental wellbeing – plan for several months and then deliver a day in Leek’s Foxlowe Arts Centre. They provide workshops (creative writing, art, suicide awareness, five ways to wellbeing, seed planting), alternative therapies, music and 15 information stands where people can ask questions and pick up leaflets.
Said Andy Collins, one of the organisers, ‘There was a good buzz throughout the day, with people chatting and taking part in the various activities. Music over the lunch-hour contributed to the happy relaxed atmosphere. The national theme this year was ‘Surviving or thriving?’ and during the afternoon art session, people did a collage of what helped them thrive. Interestingly, everyone included sunshine and some aspect of the natural world.’
