Pharmacy Support in Cheadle

Wed 27 May 2020

During the current pandemic, the demand on local pharmacies has been huge, particularly in the early days. Recognising this, Staffordshire County Council asked Support Staffordshire to identify local voluntary and community groups which would be able to help out specific pharmacies where they needed volunteers to take medication to people’s homes or to help support people queueing outside their shops.

One of the local charities that responded to this call was Moorlands Voluntary and Community Transport. Sally Bentley, chief officer of the charity, was pleased to speak to Viraj, the pharmacist at Ratcliffe’s Pharmacy in Cheadle who confirmed that they needed help taking medication to people’s homes where they were self-isolating or unable to get out. Sally asked her voluntary car drivers in the Cheadle area who would be able to help and 5 of them stepped forward.

Since then, Moorlands Voluntary and Community Transport has been able to help with 12 deliveries in and around the Cheadle area. Here is volunteer driver Leighton Heath outside the pharmacy:

Other organisations helping local pharmacies in Staffordshire brokered by Support Staffordshire are The Realise Foundation in Newcastle-under-Lyme and Heart of Tamworth in Tamworth. This urgent support adds to the very many other neighbourhood initiatives, local community groups and parish and town councils that have been helping people stuck at home by picking up their prescriptions.
