NATIONAL CHARITY TEAMS UP WITH SUPPORT STAFFORDSHIRE TO OFFER TEA AND FRIENDSHIP TO ISOLATED OLDER PEOPLE

Wed 30 Aug 2017

Contact the Elderly, the national charity dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, has teamed up with local organisation Support Staffordshire to extend an invitation to tea to older residents in Stafford.

The charity, which is looking to launch a new group in Stafford, aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone. Each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home, where they meet with a small group for tea, chat and friendship. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host once a month on a Sunday afternoon, but the volunteer drivers remain the same, which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship.

Contact the Elderly’s Development Officer, Pamela Walker, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Support Staffordshire, the largest independent voice for Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise Organisations in Staffordshire, and we hope that this partnership will allow us to reach out even further to those who need us most – older residents in Stafford.

“Our tea parties are sometimes the only social outing our guests have in a month, so they can make a real difference. Anyone who can spare a couple of hours one Sunday a month, has a driving licence, a car and a capacity for drinking tea, is eligible to volunteer!  It’s not a big commitment, and our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so I’m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.”

Residents in the Stafford aged 75 and above, who live alone and are interested in joining a Contact the Elderly group, and residents interested in volunteering for Contact the Elderly once a month as a driver, or twice a year as a host can can email Pamela.Walker@contact-the-elderly.org.uk, call 0121 603 1331 or contact the charity’s National Office on Freephone 0800 716543.
