Leek Mayor, Councillor Ben Emery, recently visited the local work club run by Support Staffordshire and Your Housing. This is one of three work clubs operating in the Moorlands since 2011 supporting local unemployed people back into work. They are open to everyone living in the Moorlands whether they are unemployed or not – anyone who wants to find work or look for a change in career is welcome and will always be greeted with a smile and a friendly face.

Rob Arnold, Employability Officer at Support Staffordshire who run the clubs with Your Housing explained: “The Staffordshire Moorlands Work Clubs are the only place in the Moorlands where any local person can come along and get free friendly and informed support to find work”.

Leek Work Club is open every week to offer support with registering on Job Seekers Allowance, constructing a CV, searching for jobs online, completing application forms and much more – including access to training courses and volunteering opportunities to increase skill levels.Photo of the Mayor visiting the Leek Work Club

Leek Mayor Councillor Ben Emery said :’ I was delighted to be invited to the Support Staffordshire Leek Work Club  and was pleased to find the room very busy and bustling with people scanning the internet, reading or studying the media for opportunities with employment prospects. Rob Arnold, Employability Officer,  introduced me to the members who were extremely helpful and friendly, explaining what was happening and the way things worked to get them back into the job market, I was very impressed by the professionalism displayed and think it a great chance to further their skills and potential in their field of experience.”

Between April 2015 and March 2016, 86 local people who have had support from the Work Clubs have found employment at companies such as Adams Food Leek, Alton Towers, Home Bargains, Belle Engineering and local care homes.

Leek Work Club is open every Wednesday, 10am -12 noon at Support Staffordshire, 9 High Street, Leek, Staffs, ST13 5DZ. Drop in or for further information contact Rob Arnold, Support Staffordshire on 01538 398240 or Louise Harley, Your Moorland Housing Group on 01538 380641.
