Harnessing the power of the Covid-19 response for long term community benefit

Over the last two months, the broad range of urgent responses across Staffordshire has taken many forms, from local authorities working with voluntary sector groups and businesses, to new mutual aid groups setting up in a matter of hours, to the fantastic neighbourly street level support response that has supported and sustained so many who have required it. This could be in terms of helping to get shopping or food deliveries for those unable to leave home, to medication collection from busy pharmacies, reducing loneliness and isolation or even walking a dog or cutting someone’s hedge.

A heart warming VE day performance by Shine and Sign Youngsters

A Makaton choir has marked VE Day by putting together a heartwarming video of the Vera Lynn classic We’ll Meet Again.

The Shine & Sign choir, which was set up by the charity Liberty for vulnerable young people with SEND to communicate their love of music, has been rehearsing via the video conferencing site Zoom.

The choir has proved to be invaluable for some of its members who have difficulties speaking and communicating. Makaton is a special language programme which uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate.

Funding & Support from your Community Foundation

Up to £80,000 of funding is being made available to Stoke-on-Trent based organisations who are supporting people affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.  Funding is available as small grants from The Community Foundation for Staffordshire.

There will be three tiers of grants available;

Tier One - Applications for up to £1000 for small locally based groups who are supporting a specific village or estate. Decisions on these grants will usually be made within 2 working days.

Online Introduction to Autism workshop developed by MPFT to support families

The NHS service supporting autistic children and young people in South Staffordshire and their families has developed a new online workshop in response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s interim Children and Young People’s Autism Service has worked with a number of families to adapt its face-to-face Introduction to Autism session into an easy-to-use podcast-style audio and video workshop.

In March the world as we knew it changed for so many people in the UK due to the coronavirus. During that month the country went into lockdown apart from those working to keep vital services going, in the NHS, in social care, in farming, food and distribution and in food retailing to name just a few of our key workers.

I am sure we all want to pay tribute to those who are so actively supporting the fightback against COVID-19, including all these people.
