Bursary scheme in memory of Burntwood fundraiser Stephen Sutton open for applications

A scheme set up in memory of a Burntwood fundraiser to support young people in the town is open for applications.

The 2019 Stephen Sutton Bursary Award is handed out by Burntwood Town Council.

It is aimed at talented young people who live within the boundaries of the town and is split into two age bands – 11-14 years and 15-19 years. Up to £1,000 is available in each age category.

Nationwide Community Grants Programme

The Nationwide Community Grants programme awards up to £50,000 to local housing projects that will strengthen local communities by supporting the most vulnerable by:

  • Preventing people from losing their home
  • Helping people in to a home
  • Supporting people to thrive within the home environment

Nationwide believes doing what is right by their members and their communities is at the heart of what it means to be a building society. Following a member vote in 2007, Nationwide invests at least 1% of pre-tax profits to support good causes each year.

The following five candidates were elected following an open ballot of the voluntary sector:

Tamworth gains a new Place of Welcome

Places of Welcome, the network of community groups which seeks to provide each neighbourhood with somewhere to go for a cuppa, a chat and some support, has another new addition. The latest place to join the network in the Tamworth area is Amington Church on the Green, which opens every Thursday from 2pm until 4pm.

The Kingswood Trust based in Staffordshire has been recognised with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK.

Kingswood Trust delivers outdoor environmental opportunities for children, families, educators and the wider community. It offers residential stays, day visits and programmes that support learning, personal development, health and wellbeing, helping some of the most disadvantaged people in the country.

Congratulations to two Lichfield organisations winning a prestigious award

Queens Award

Lichfield Cathedral and Lichfield & Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust volunteers have been awarded The Queens Award for Voluntary Service.

It is the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK to recognise outstanding work in their communities, and is the equivalent of an individual MBE. It sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering, with the work of those awarded being judged of the highest standard.
