Dying Matters Week - information event in Wombourne

Wed 10 Apr 2019

A public information event is being organised on 15th May at Wombourne Civic Centre.  The purpose of the event is to share information with the public about funeral planning and bereavement and to encourage people to talk about the future and for dealing with what to do after a bereavement.

The date coincides with ‘Dying Matters’ Week which is a national awareness week that encourages people to talk about death and dying and planning for the future.  The focus this year for ‘Dying Matters’ Week is ‘Are We Ready?’ and seeks to help people to look into getting their affairs in order, write their will, support someone who is grieving and look at the funeral options available to them and asks ‘Are We Ready’ to do what we can in our communities to  help people to be ready.

The event is free of charge to attend and promotional leaflets, posters and social media posts will advertise the names of the confirmed attendees and organisations.  There is currently space for more organisations interested in attending.

Wombourne Funeral Services, Co-op Funeralcare and Jennings Funeral Directors have confirmed that they will be attending and will provide refreshments.  A local florist has confirmed that they will have some floral arrangements on display.  A local caterer will have some of their sample wake buffet menus there as well as some cake for people to sample.  A funeral celebrant (Helen Emery who is registered with the UK Society of Celebrants) will be there to offer advice and guidance to people who may want an alternative to a religious ceremony.  Karen from CASS The Carer’s Association has confirmed that they will be there to be on hand with some of their information and to talk to people.

The Council will also have a stand offering advice about the options available to them at our cemeteries.  This year is 10 years since we opened our first cemetery at Sytch Lane in Wombourne so as part of celebrating this we will be asking people to come along and place a message for their loved ones on our memorial tree.  Dudley Council (Gornal Wood Crematorium) will be coming along to offer advice and information to people who may have questions about cremation etc.

The event will be from 10.00 a.m. until 3.00 p.m. and organisations can either be there all day or if they would prefer to leave leaflets and information there and only attend for a few hours (or less) we would be happy to hand out leaflets etc. and pass on contact details to people.
