East Staffordshire February Volunteering News

This time of year is usually one where the interest in volunteering is at a low point. The rush of New Year’s resolutions to help others dwindles as the long winter nights and cold days limit what can be done in the community.

But, this year it is different; yes, the nights are long and the days are very cold, but, there is an underlying swell of people who want to continue to help others during the ongoing Covid crisis.

The biggest need is quite simple; look after your family, friends and neighbours – are they in need? How can you help?

Council pledges support to local voluntary organisation

Cannock Chase Council Leader Councillor George Adamson and Garry Jones the Chief Executive at Support Staffordshire have signed the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise Sector Pledge for Local Authorities.

In November 2020, the Council’s Cabinet approved to give Support Staffordshire a grant for £8,350 for a 12 month period to deliver an additional 5 hours per week to support the voluntary sector within the District.

CANNOCK: Community Buddy.

Spotlight on Volunteering from Home

Under the current lockdown rules, volunteering is an acceptable reason to leave your home. However, with some groups currently closed, and other's utilising only their existing volunteer base, it might seem like a difficult situation to start volunteering. This is especially true when many people tell me that they wish to start volunteering so that they can leave their house and meet other people.

SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE: Digital Volunteer

Age UK are looking to recruit a new Digital Volunteer. This person will help the charity to to deliver their Digitalising Day Opportunities Project by leading weekly google meet activity sessions remotely with service users in based in Day Opportunities Centres in South Staffordshire. Age UK Centres are based in Tamworth, Cannock, Lichfield, Penkridge and Wombourne and the service users are older people who have dementia.

COUNTYWIDE: Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Volunteer Role

Unfortunately thousands of cats each year are abandoned or have strayed and rely on charities like Cats Protection for help. Becoming a TNR volunteer is one way you can make a real difference to cats in your local area. Our TNR volunteers help reduce the number of feral cats by raising awareness of our TNR programmes, setting humane traps to safely capture cats, taking them to local vets to be neutered, and hopefully returning them back to their territory. Local TNR programmes are crucial, as feral and abandoned cats present a huge challenge for communities across the UK.

COUNTYWIDE: Internet Support and PR Assistant Volunteer Opportunity

MY Inter Theatre Company work with adults with learning and physical disabilities creating theatre projects and learning music/singing/drama and movement skills. They have groups across the county, including Stoke, Uttoxeter, Burton, Lichfield and Tamworth and are user led. Their members are encouraged to proactively support the day to day running of each session as well as promote the sessions and performances.
