Community and Voluntary Groups - What's next for Tamworth Town Centre

Tue 9 Jul 2019

People who run community, voluntary and charitable groups in Tamworth are being invited to share their views on Tamworth town centre and how it should evolve for the future as part of an ongoing consultation campaign.

Tamworth…What’s Next? was launched by the Leader of Tamworth Borough Council, Cllr Daniel Cook, earlier this year, with the aim of working with residents, businesses and visitors to develop a new vision for the town centre.

So far, more than 200 people have filled in an online survey form, hundreds have commented via social media and around 80 people attended an initial series of workshops in Marmion House with Cllr Cook to discuss the top emerging themes.

Further consultation events are now planned with the aim of carrying out more targeted and specific debate around some of the ideas and issues raised.

To that end, a further workshop session is planned for the community and voluntary sector in Marmion House, Lichfield Street at 6.15pm on Thursday, July 18. It is for anyone who works in a voluntary, community or charity group in the town and has views on how we can ensure the town centre evolves in a way that is sustainable and accessible to all.

Cllr Cook said: “We’ve had a great response to the Tamworth…What’s Next? campaign so far, with hundreds of people engaging and coming forward with positive ideas about how we move forward with town centre regeneration.

“Establishing a new vision for a town centre that is fit for the 21st century means identifying viable uses that people want and the market can support. The council can’t do this alone and we need to work with our partners to make sure the new vision is correct and sustainable. We’ve had some lively debates so far with some great ideas submitted, but we now need to drill down on some of those even further with our local partners.

“We would like to hear from anyone who runs, or is involved with, voluntary groups and clubs in the town, so that we can ensure we are capturing the views of as many people as possible.

“Whether you run a walking group, a befriending service, mental health services, a scout or cadet group, or any other service in the voluntary sector, please come and share your opinions. We want our new town centre vision to be created with everyone in mind, so we welcome as many ideas and opinions as possible.”

Places at the session need to be booked in advance  from Tamworth Information Centre in Marmion House, Lichfield Street, by emailing tic@tamworth.gov.uk with your name, address and phone number, by texting the details to 88020 (please start your text with ‘TBCTIC’), or by calling 01827 709581. Please reserve your place by midday on Thursday, July 18.

During the workshop, Cllr Cook will share the findings of the survey as the basis for further debate and discussion. This includes the top 10 ideas people felt were key to town centre regeneration and the commonly recurring themes.

Some significant projects are already underway in the town centre, including the £6.2million creation of the Enterprise Quarter and refurbishment of the historic Tamworth Assembly Rooms theatre, due to reopen later this year, and the council purchase of the Gungate site. A major master planning project is currently ongoing as to how that site should be developed in line with what the market needs and can sustain.
