Arts, Culture & Heritage

Support Photo of people in an art galleryStaffordshire works with a wide range arts, heritage and cultural groups across the county.

These include music groups such as community bands and community radio stations; artistic groups, art therapy groups, art centres and galleries; dance and theatre groups; and organisations working in new media and audio-visual arts.

We also work with heritage groups including civic societies, museums, churches, castles and other historic buildings and sites, many of which also have ‘friends of’ groups that in turn support their work. Others support and bring to life aspects of social history and particular industries such as the heritage of the collieries across the south of the county.

Other cultural groups include those dedicated to particular faiths or parts of the world including twinning associations that connect Staffordshire to towns and cities across the world.

We work with arts, cultural and heritage groups in all aspects of running their organisation, from setting up, to financial management, building a committee, attracting volunteers, marketing their events and winning funding from places such as the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Here are some of our members to give you an idea of the sorts of groups we support

How we work with groups

Most arts, heritage and cultural groups are open to the general public, either to join as members or to attend events and activities hosted by the group. This means they need sound policies to ensure they run good events and keep the public safe.

Members working in this area often receive little or no funding from the state and must raise their own funds or bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and similar trusts or foundations.

Heritage groups in particular will often own or manage buildings and in many cases they are old buildings which need a lot of tlc. We can help with all aspects of running a building from what insurance to get, to training volunteers in customer service.

There are currently no dedicated forums or networks that we are aware of dedicated to voluntary sector heritage or the arts in Staffordshire. We would love to hear from organisations interested in working with us on the future development of a network or forum.

Staffordshire County Council maintain a list of local authority arts and heritage contacts here.
